Allergy to cow’s milk (CMA) has considerable negative effects on the family unit, according to findings from an international survey. In addition to addressing the disturbing physical effects of the disease in children (who are vomiting, diarrhea, poor growth and eczema), 70% of parents of children with CMA said that makes them feel guilty and worried and 82% they said has led lack of sleep.
Cow’s milk is the most common cause of food allergy in infants and children, affecting approximately between 2 and 3% of babies internationally. The main symptoms of allergy to cow’s milk are rash , wheezing, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, poor growth (weight gain) and fatigue.
Dr Martin Brueton, advisory member of the advisory committee of “acting against allergy,” retired pediatrician and gastroenterologist at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London, UK, commented: “Having a child with an allergy to cow’s milk can be stressful for parents. Babies with allergy to cow’s milk may experience a range of symptoms, from skin rashes to gastric problems, frequent crying and weight gain problems. Parents feel unprotected and that instinct to give the baby more milk, usually the only source of food for the baby-aggravated, rather than solve the problem. Until the child is properly diagnosed and is provided with a suitable substitute for milk, the effect on parents and the whole family is significant. ”
